A morphological study of poly(divinylbenzene-co-acrylic acid) in crosslinking precipitation polymerization

摘要: Divinylbenzene-80 (DVB-80) and polar monomer acrylic acid (AA) having hydrogen bonding at a total loading of 5 vol% were precipitated-copolymerized in variety organic solvents with 2,2′-azobis(isobutyronitrile) (AIBN) as initiator. The experiments investigated from two-dimensional matrix, i.e., the actual crosslinking degree DVB varying 0 to 80% solvent composition 100% toluene mixture acetonitrile, when acetonitrile was used reaction solvent. Under various conditions, six distinct morphologies including soluble polymers, swellable microgels, coagulum, irregular microparticles, nano-/micrometer microspheres formed structures these polymer architectures described. A morphological map utilized discuss effects both on transitions between morphology domains. results demonstrated that are by an internal contraction due marginal solvency continuous phase network through covalent well interchain hydrogen-bonding carboxylic units.
