CANCER INCIDENCE IN KARACHI, PAKISTAN: FIRST RESULTS FROM KARACHI CANCER REGISTRY

摘要: No cancer incidence data from Pakistan have been published in the 5 decades since independence. Incidence for period 1995-1997 population of Karachi South district (1.7 million) are presented here. A total 4,268 new cases were registered during this period: 2,160 males and 2,108 females. Overall, 95.3% incident microscopically verified. The rates all cancers combined 80.5 per 100,000 (crude) 136.7 (age- standardised [ASR]) 91.8 163.2 (ASR) In males, lung (ASR 20.3) was most frequently recorded malignancy followed by oral cavity 13.8) larynx 8.6). females, breast common site cancer, accounting one third female 51.7), 14.1) ovarian 10.2). reports highest any Asian population, except Jews Israel. Tobacco smoking is estimated to be responsible 40% tobacco chewing a further substantial proportion head neck cancers.
