Association between iron deficiency anemia and febrile seizures

摘要: OBJECTIVE To find the association between iron deficiency anemia and febrile convulsions among children presenting at Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi. DESIGN Case control study. PLACE AND DURATION OF STUDY Paediatric Department of Karachi, from January 2001 to December 2001. PATIENTS METHODS A total 60 patients fulfilled study criteria seizure or any illness. These were divided into two groups with having seizures comprised cases while those only illness no controls. Both had equal number matched for age gender. Workup was done data analyzed using SPSS version 10. RESULTS The mean (group A) 22.97+/-9.52 months that controls B) 22.77+/-11.33. There also significant difference in gender distribution groups. Iron significantly more frequent as compared evident parameters studied i.e. hemoglobin <10 g/dl (p-value= <0.000), hematocrit <30% (p= <0.01), MCV <70 fL (p=<0.002), MCH<24 pg <0.001) serum ferritin ng/ml <0.000). CONCLUSION Plasma level lower suggesting deficient are prone seizures. follow-up found be iron-deficient time a first determine incidence subsequent after treatment would great interest.
