Hedging Strategies in Academic Discourse: A Comparative Analysis of Turkish Writers and Native Writers of English

摘要: Abstract Given the use of appropriate uncertainty, right strength claim for data, politeness and proper positioning oneself, though hedging is an important component western academic discourse there appears inadequate awareness. The present study aims to reveal tendency preferences Turkish Anglo-sphere scholars in terms using strategies, frequency hedges whether any differences exist their published articles. Data corpus was composed 100 articles English that equally belong Non-native writers (Turkish) native (Anglo-sphere). Three main parts i.e. Introduction, Discussion, Conclusion, where devices are commonly used will be analyzed through a concordance program get hedge frequencies. outputs categorized according framework included 9 types (Adverbs Frequency, Quantifiers, Modal Auxiliary Verbs, Epistemic Adjectives & Adverbs, Nouns, Conversational Informal, Introductory phrases, Vague References). by means MANOVA Mann-Whitney tests compare (NNW) Native (NW) frequency. Having completed statistical analyses, function both groups examined so as interpret strategies. results provide insights about tentative language strategies NNWs NWs English. Further, nine types, each group's tendencies differences.
