Reconciling Serodiscordance: Lived Experiences of Mixed HIV-Status Relationships in Ethiopia

摘要: This qualitative study explored how HIV-positive partners in serodiscordant couples Addis Ababa, Ethiopia conceptualize serodiscordance, negotiate daily life, and manage HIV transmission risk. Although the emergence of Treatment as Prevention (TasP) has improved management many places, social complexities serodiscordance remain much same at site. mixed-status relationships were interviewed individually (N = 15) or a group (one interview, five participants). All participants taking antiretroviral treatment (ART). None understood science serodiscordance; resorted to spiritual explanations their situation. Sexual intimacy was complicated by tension between resuming “normal” sexual life avoiding viral transmission, gendered differences, with women more likely suggest that eroded power negotiations. most sexually active concerned about transmitting HIV-negative partner, desire for children commonly cited cause non-use condoms. people experience range psychological socio-cultural challenges from stigma verbal abuse guilt reduced intimacy, but committed survival relationship. Couples-based counseling culturally sensitive interventions should be developed implemented.
