Consequences of Corporal Punishment Among African Americans: The Importance of Context and Outcome

摘要: Corporal punishment is a controversial practice used by the majority of American parents and especially prevalent among African Americans. Research regarding its consequences has produced mixed results although it clear that there need for considering context within which corporal administered. To assess impact spanking, we employed an expanded parenting typology includes punishment. Longitudinal self-report data from sample 683 youth (54% female) were utilized to evaluate relative resulting eight styles on three outcomes: conduct problems, depressive symptoms, school engagement. Results Negative Binomial Regression Models indicate effect depends upon constellation behaviors embedded type outcome being considered. While never case any added benefit adding punishment, also using not always associated with poor outcomes. Overall, however, our findings show include do produce outcomes as positive those authoritative parenting.
