摘要: On occasion, a patient may have two or more clinical cultures yielding coagulase-negative staphylococcus If these multiple isolates the same phenotype, one might conclude that strain was reisolated from patient, indicating its persistent and pathological presence. We examined validity of this conclusion when we applied number characterizing systems to collection 143 staphylococci collected during an outbreak intravascular catheter-associated sepsis. The probability classifying random as phenotype species follows: P = 0.356 for phage typing, 0.348 Baird-Parker biotyping, 0.346 API STAPH-IDENT (Analytab Products) system, 0.327 Bentley et al. 0.077 antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. Although patterns had lowest probability, variability in test results 7.7% tendency strains similar antibiograms effectively raised 0.897. combination with resulted 0.037 0.147. When all above methods were used together 0.014 achieved. Five patients blood spaced than 1 day apart identical by criteria, thus confirming prolonged bacteremia. also incidence slime production. Slime production not associated any groups, but symptomatic infections (P less 0.05) gentamicin resistance 0.01). stable assistance typing staphylococci.
