摘要: Fishermen often describe feeling alienated and ill-informed regarding the planning decision making that accompanies fisheries management. Like scientists resource managers, they are greatly concerned by changes in marine ecosystems, effect this will have on sustainability of livelihoods, knock-on effects to communities live in. In recent years, European management has encouraged participation engagement provide opportunities for fishermen work closely common problems face. successful participatory projects where sustainable working practices been achieved, included as collaborating partners fully integrated design implementation field studies. innovative ideas can result greater but not institutional support implement them. Overcoming these barriers requires a better understanding fishermens’ perception issues, integration their knowledge into research. Our experience trying enable deeper more systematic among throughout Europe during GAP programme (Bridging gap between science, stakeholders policy; see www.gap2.eu) reveals how complex incentives influence roles research play. With reform Common Fisheries Policy imminent EuropeanCommission’s desire play leading role managing fisheries, there is need establishing governance structures stronger
