A 2.5-GHz asymmetric multilevel outphasing power amplifier in 65-nm CMOS

摘要: We present a high-efficiency transmitter based on asymmetric multilevel outphasing (AMO). AMO transmitters improve their efficiency over LINC (linear amplification using nonlinear components) by switching the output envelopes of power amplifiers among discrete set levels. This minimizes occurrence large angles, reducing energy lost in combiner. demonstrate this concept with 2.5-GHz, 20-dBm peak 2-level designed 65-nm CMOS process. To authors' knowledge, IC is first integrated implementation concept. At power, measured power-added 27.8%. For 16-QAM signal 6.1dB peak-to-average ratio, prototype improves average from 4.7% to 10.0% compared standard system.
