摘要: Hot-pressed composite ceramics with 0--30 vol% SiC{sub w} have been investigated to determine the effect of composition (i.e., amount SiC whiskers) on microstructure and mechanical properties. The composites exhibited superior properties, especially in fracture toughness, compared monolithic TiB{sub 2}. Fracture toughness measured by single-edge notched beam method increased from 3.4 MPa {radical}m for hot-pressed unreinforced 2} 7.8 containing 30 whiskers. lack increase flexural strength increasing volume fraction whisker can be explained a decrease relative density associated agglomerates. Finite element analysis scanning electron microscopy observation show that toughening mechanisms may attributed crack deflection around whiskers bridging due pullout.
