Traditional medicine in oman: its role in ophthalmology.

摘要: Aim: To present three patients with ocular disease who developed a range of complications following use traditional medications. Settings and Design: Case series Methods: Three were examined in the Ophthalmic department tertiary care teaching hospital Sultanate Oman between 2003 2004, seeking medicines or healing practices for various ophthalmic problems described below. Results: The first patient was computer professional chalazion; used plant extract from 'Calotropis procera' as part treatment. He corneal edema decrease vision his left eye application extract. Treatment topical steroids antibiotics resulted complete clinical visual recovery. second fungal ulcer (dermatophyte - Trichophyton mentagrophyte) after sustaining injury an animal tail to right honey pain relief prior presentation. She responded poorly anti-fungal treatment, underwent penetrating keratoplasty recurrence infection graft that vascularized scar. third five-year-old child treated 'wasam' on occiput intraocular inflammation bilateral uncomplicated cataract extraction. Following this treatment steroid discontinued. Wasam indirectly exacerbation secondary glaucoma poor well 'Wasam ulcers' occiput. Despite inflammation, outcome poor. Conclusion: Traditional medicine is sought by many variable reasons. Lack evidence-based scientific data its safety efficacy does not deter Omanis flocking healers. However, when applied diseases, seem cause more harm than benefit patient.
