摘要: Abstract Background Aging is associated with structural, functional and biochemical alterations in the nervous system. Calorie restriction (CR) was found to retard most physiological indices of aging. Objectives This work aimed investigate effect CR on age-related changes sciatic nerves. Materials methods Thirty male albino rats aged 1 month were equally divided into three groups; Group I [control adult-ad libitum AL]: fed a regular diet sacrificed at age 6 months, group II (aged-AL group): AL 18 III (aged CR) 40% calorie restricted months. Rats anesthetized nerves processed for light, electron microscope morphometric studies. Oxidative stress investigated by estimation lipid perioxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA) tissue level antioxidant enzyme; superoxide dismutase activity (SOD). Results The (AL) appeared disorganized, thick perineurium increased collagen fibers decreased g -ratio. Abnormal myelin forms seen as outfolded loops, thin denuded myelin, splitting figures interlamellar vacuoles. Schwann cells revealed vacuolated cytoplasm. There also significant increase MDA decrease SOD comparison control adult (AL). Apparent structural histomorphological improvement noticed after rats. Conclusion caused alleviating such effects.
