Social, cultural and structural influences on household waste recycling: A case study

摘要: Abstract The household-recycling rate in the Borough of Burnley, England 2001/2002 was only half national average 12%. This research employed both quantitative and qualitative surveys order to ascertain whether householders’ attitudes recycling were contributory factors generally poor performance investigate other social, cultural structural influences. has a large Asian–British population concentrated two deprived wards where rates are particularly low, so special attention given ascertaining their towards recycling. survey comprised postal questionnaire sent random sample 360 households drawn from electoral register. consisted group interviews with at local community centres focus groups attended by volunteers study. findings suggest that householders very willing participate recycling, as shown almost 80% claiming recycle paper, but services too unreliable inconvenient allow them do comprehensively. found be no different those wider population, low participation being linked higher priorities imposed upon economic deprivation. broadly line literature tends among more affluent older people, lower less younger households, probably due part availability storage space time, implication Borough's preponderance terraced housing militates against high rate.
