摘要: Abstract An Australian-designed bycatch reduction device (BRD), known as the AusTED, was modified to improve its efficiency and simplify design. The version (the AusTED II) tested under a range of conditions typical prawn trawl fisheries north eastern Australia. Trials occurred during commercial trawling operations heighten industry awareness research into BRDs credibility results industry. Average ranged between 15% 49% depending upon fishery conditions, capture large animals such stingrays sea turtles significantly reduced. II had variable effect on catches ranging from no significant difference 36% loss. offers fishers benefits animal exclusion plus reduced bycatch. Reductions in were explained part by fish species with “fusiform” “laterally compressed” body-forms. Unexpectedly, “weak swimming fish” also excluded consistently II. trialing single BRD across Australia demonstrated variability performance that can be attributed mainly quantity composition species. It is highly likely other systems like will not immediately suitable all east Australian fisheries. acceptance depend efficient pragmatic designs coupled confidence results.
