Prospective study of the effect of topical application of Mitomycin C in refractory pediatric caustic esophageal strictures.

摘要: BACKGROUND Esophageal strictures resulting from caustic ingestion in children are usually difficult to be managed, and surgical replacement is required for cases refractory frequent dilatation sessions. Topical Mitomycin C (MMC) has been recently used the management of resistant strictures. We evaluated efficacy MMC application treatment long esophageal METHODS This prospective study included 120 patients both sexes with (> 3 cm length). All were randomly divided into two equal groups using research randomizer program (1:1 randomization), group I underwent endoscopic therapy only II topical MMC. Follow-up was done regularly by assessing dysphagia score after 6 months management. The procedure repeated four times 2-week intervals. Complete relieve symptoms (dysphagia score = 0) assessed follow-up period. RESULTS complete cure detected 81.6% compared 40% first group, p-value < 0.0001. During follow-up, average sessions needed 3.25 ± 2.78 6.25 ± 1.74 (p < 0.001). mean cost who showed symptomatic improvement significantly lower (272.2 ± 51 US$) when (404 ± SD 55.7 US$). CONCLUSIONS Cure rate double group. improved reduced number frequency dilatations alleviate hence treatment.
