摘要: No population increases without limit and ecologists have utilised two paradigms to find out why. The density-dependent paradigm assumes that birth, death movement rates will be related density. In many cases they are not, the search for density dependence has become a holy grail. A better approach is through mechanistic which searches relationships between rates, mechanisms controlling populations, such as disease, predation, food shortage territoriality. Seven suggestions made analysing role of disease in regulation mammals. Useful progress flow more quickly from need dependence.
