摘要: The immune system plays a key role in preventing tumor formation by recognizing and destroying malignant cells. For over century, researchers have attempted to harness the response as cancer treatment, although this approach has only recently achieved clinical success. Head neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is sixth most common worldwide associated with cigarette smoking, alcohol consumption, betel nut use, human papillomavirus infection. Unfortunately, mortality from HNSCC remains high, partially due limits on therapy secondary significant morbidity current treatments. Therefore, immunotherapeutic approaches treatment are attractive for their potential reduce while improving survival. However, application of immunotherapies disease been challenging because profoundly immunosuppressive, resulting decreased absolute lymphocyte counts, impaired natural killer function, reduced antigen-presenting tumor-permissive cytokine profile. Despite these challenges, numerous trials testing safety efficacy currently underway, many which produced promising results. This review will summarize that undergoing trials.
