Use of Livestock Guarding Animals to Reduce Predation on Livestock

Preda-tors were reported to kill 273,000 sheepand lambs 2000) and 147,000cattle calves in theUnited States, 61,000 goats Ari-zona, New Mexico, Texas (NASS,2000) during either 1999 or 2000. Sev-eral methods, including the use of live-stock guarding dogs, llamas, don-keys, have used reduce thesemortalities (Andelt, 1996, 2001). In thispaper, I summarize effectivenessof livestock animals for reduc-ing predation on domestic sheep andgoats. Recent reviews guard-ing are provided by Smith et al.(2000) Rigg (2001).
