The Use of a Surgery-Specific Written Examination in the Selection Process of Surgical Residents

摘要: Objective Selection of surgical residents is a difficult task, and program directors are interested in identifying the best candidates. Among qualities being sought after ability to acquire knowledge, eventually do well on their board examinations. During interview process, many programs use results from United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) identify they think will academically. The purpose this study was evaluate different method such residents, through surgery-specific written exam (SSWE). Design A retrospective review our between 2004 2012 done. 50-question SSWE designed administered candidates day interview. Scores USMLE were compared with American Board Surgery In-Training (ABSITE). Correlation coefficients calculated compared. Setting Community based General residency program. Participants Resident applicants. Results Forty-three had scores available SSWE, Part 1 (USMLE-1), 2 (USMLE-2). There ABSITE for 38 postgraduate year (PGY) 1. USMLE-1 statistically significant correlation ( r = 0.327, p 0.045) score PGY-1 (ABSITE-1), while USMLE-2 slightly less 0.314, 0.055) ABSITE-1. However, much stronger 0.656, Conclusions An good who later ABSITE. It better than using more general USMLE. Since has been shown correlate performance examinations, that should consider incorporating an into application process.
