摘要: Abstract Background Throughout the human aging lifespan, neurons acquire an unusually high burden of wear and tear; this is likely why age considered strongest risk factor for development Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Von Economo (VENs) are rare, spindle-shaped cells mostly populated in anterior cingulate cortex. In a prior study, “SuperAgers” (individuals older than 80 years with outstanding memory ability) showed higher VEN densities compared to elderly controls average memory, those amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment (aMCI). The intrinsic vulnerabilities these unclear, their contribution neurodegeneration unknown. current study investigated influence severity disease (AD) on density. Methods total neuronal were quantitated using unbiased stereological methods cortex postmortem samples from following subject groups: younger (age 20–60), SuperAgers, cognitively 65+), individuals diagnosed antemortem aMCI, dementia AD ( N  = 5, per group). Results group significantly lower density p Conclusions VENs vulnerable pathology, particularly later stages pathogenesis. Their do not change throughout cognition, they more numerous SuperAgers.
