摘要: High performance liquid chromatography (HPCL) has been employed to study the distribution throughout human retina of zeaxanthin and lutein, two major components macular pigment. Differences between individuals have also studied with a view uncovering possible age-related effects. Both pigments were detected in prenatal eyes (approximately 20 weeks gestation) but did not form visible yellow spot. Generally they easily discernible until about 6 months after birth. For 87 donors ages 3 95, no dependence on age was observed quantity either approximately 90% these, dominant. remaining 10%, as well for seven youngest donors, all below 2, eyes, lutein In individual retinas, lutein:zeaxanthin ratio increased from an average 1:2.4 central 0-0.25 mm over 2:1 periphery (8.7-12.2 mm). The variation this eccentricity linearly correlated corresponding rod:cone ratio. A selective mechanism uptake, which results cones rods preferentially acquiring respectively, could explain correlation.
