Urban cemetery planning and the conflicting role of local and regional interests

摘要: Strategic planning for cemeteries should be one of the easier tasks planners. Supply and demand can estimated with some certainty. Land allocation through a zoning assessment process able to identify secure appropriate locations minimal social environmental impact disruption. However stigma new cemetery in neighbourhood, irrespective need, divisive land use issue that result strong resident opposition buoyed by support their elected representatives. This paper examines past present issues have informed Sydney and, four case studies, traces tensions within development at rural–urban fringe. We conclude regionally based must play dominant role considering this balance what appears emotive community response is an essential activity urban fabric.
