Incidence and impact of infection in a nursing home care unit

摘要: In this study we examined the frequency of infection and its consequences in a Veterans Administration medical center nursing home care unit during first 9 months operation. A total 231 patients were enrolled followed up for an average stay 115 days. Sixty-nine infections occurred 50 yielded period prevalence rate 22% incidence 2.6 per 1000 days patient care. Symptomatic urinary tract infections, pneumonia, skin soft tissue accounted 41%, 32%, 17% respectively. Staphylococci, streptococci, aerobic gram-negative bacilli most common bacterial isolates. Thirty-four episodes (49%) required administration parenteral antibiotics unit, 21 (30%) necessitated transfer to acute hospital management. Infection caused one death contributed 4 55 other who died period.
