摘要: Summary Background The epidemiology of invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in children aged ≤5 years Saudi Arabia has not been described. We conducted a retrospective surveillance study to describe the IPD population served by National Guard Health Affairs hospitals central and western regions Arabia. Methods reviewed medical records old admitted King Abdulaziz Medical City Riyadh Jeddah with infections for period January 1999 through December 2003. Only microbiologically confirmed cases (meningitis or bacteremia) were included analysis. Results A total 82 cases, 19 (23.2%) meningitis 63 (76.8%) bacteremia, diagnosed during five-year period. Of these, 12.2% (10/82) died, case-fatality slightly but insignificantly higher (15.8%) than bacteremia (11.1%). average annual incidence was 17.4 per 100 000 (4.0 13.4 bacteremia). roughly similar males females (18.3 16.6, respectively; p =0.663) almost 4-fold first year life compared next four (40.6 11.5, =0.043). Conclusions In pre-vaccination era (1999–2003) Arabia, comparable rates from many industrialized countries, ≤1 suffering highest risk among those years.
