摘要: An architectural approach for very-high-capacity wide-area optical networks is presented, and a proposed program of research to address key system device issues described. The network based on dense multiwavelength technology scalable in terms the number networked users, geographical range coverage, aggregate capacity. Of paramount importance achievement scalability are notions wavelength reuse translation. A distributed interconnect that wavelength-selective electronically controllable, permitting same limited set wavelengths be reused among other access stations, employed. By exercising switches, wavelength-routed connectivity between stations can reconfigured as needed. multihop overlay involving translation self-routing fast packet switches permits full connectivity, if desired at individual virtual circuit level. Using just eight wavelengths, such could principle population 100 million users over nationwide geography with an expected delay equal 12 hops. >
