摘要: The Sundaland Biodiversity Hotspot of Southeast Asia is widely regarded as one the most imperiled biodiversity hotspots due to high degrees endemism coupled with extensive logging and forest conversion oil palm. large financial returns these activities have made it difficult conserve much region's lowland primary forest, suggesting a trade-off between economic interests conservation. Here, we provide an empirical examination magnitude this in Borneo. By incorporating both values responses across regimes, show that selectively logged forests represent surprisingly low-cost option for conserving levels biodiversity. In our study, standing value timber dropped from ∼$10,460 ha−1 ∼$2,010 after two rotations, yet retained over 75% bird dung beetle species found unlogged forest. We suggest conservation represents highly cost-efficient opportunity enlarge existing protected areas, improve connectivity them, create new, areas.
