摘要: To answer the requirement of European Commission's Water Framework Directive (WFD) for biological-effects endpoints to classify ecological health aquatic ecosystems, we propose biomarker response index (BRI). The BRI, based on a suite biomarkers at different levels biological individual level, provides an integrated relative measure general status coastal invertebrates. Using mussels (Mytilus edulis) from 10 estuaries classified by Environment Agency England and Wales under WFD was compared. Eight sites were healthier than predicted two showed similar that point-source pollution risk classification. Results indicate BRI offers potential organism can be used in monitoring as additional aid reduce uncertainty defining classification provide better evidence existing impact.
