摘要: Aim Millennia of human activity have drastically shaped the Earth's surface confining wildlife in ever more rare and sparse habitat fragments. Within strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011–2020, Aichi Target 11 aims at expansion current protected area (PA) system maintenance improvement its connectivity. This study providing first overview functionality PA networks across six continents different dispersal distances relevant terrestrial mammals. Location Global. Methods We used a graph theory approach to assess connectivity wide range distances. We assessed country-level networks, continental contribution connectivity. Results National are characterized by very spatial arrangements that translate into levels connectivity, ranging from where reachable is mostly determined structural within PAs (e.g. Africa) depends on animal among Europe). size correlates positively with all species, followed number; contributes less interacts number PAs. Main conclusions Continental perform worse than national networks. Transboundary often weak should be improved, especially countries important promoting Increasing coverage good strategy improve multispecies
