摘要: Clinicians recognise nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as valuable first-line agents in the treatment of rheumatic disorders and dangerous irritants to gastrointestinal tract. This has led questions about economic impact NSAID-induced gastropathy populations. study estimated 1992 costs NSAID-associated episodes, calculated an iatrogenic cost factor for among elderly members a health maintenance organisation (HMO), Northwest Region Kaiser Permanente. Using data retrieved from automated databases medical records, NSAID antiulcer drug were calculated, estimates made incidence rates inpatient outpatient gastropathies, services provided treat them, those services. Permanente spent $US0.35 each $US1.00 on therapy elderly, 1.35. The average per episode was $US2172. pharmacy user $US80 $US43. Although findings specific HMO because used, methodology employed formulary influence selection, they show that substantial amount resources used gastropathies underscoring risk prescribing NSAIDs reinforcing need their prudent use patients.
