摘要: The emergence and spread of Plasmodium falciparum with resistance to chloroquine (CQ), the safest cheapest anti-malarial drug, coupled increasing cost alternative drugs especially in developing countries have necessitated urgent need tap potential plants for novel anti-malarials. present study investigates activity methanolic extracts 13 medicinal from Malaiyur Javadhu hills South India against blood stage CQ-sensitive (3D7) CQ-resistant (INDO) strains P. culture using fluorescence-based SYBR Green I assay. Sorbitol-synchronized parasites were incubated under normal conditions at 2% hematocrit 1% parasitemia absence or presence concentrations plant extracts. CQ artemisinin used as positive controls, while 0.4% DMSO was negative control. cytotoxic effects on host cells assessed by functional assay HeLa cultured RPMI containing 10% fetal bovine serum, 0.21% sodium bicarbonate 50 μg/mL gentamycin (complete medium). Plant (bark methanol Annona squamosa (IC50, 30 μg/mL), leaf Ocimum gratissimum 32 μg/mL), tenuiflorum 31 μg/mL), Solanum torvum 31 μg/mL) Justicia procumbens 63 μg/mL), showed moderate activity. Aristolochia indica 10 μg/mL), Cassia auriculata 14 μg/mL), Chrysanthemum indicum 20 μg/mL) Dolichos biflorus promising low observed flower A. , extract Catharanthus roseus, Gymnema sylvestre >100 μg/mL). These four exhibited IC50 (μg/mL) 17, 24, 19 24 respectively also resistant INDO strain falciparum. high TC50 mammalian cell cytotoxicity indicates selectivity good indices range 0.9–1.7 indica, C. auriculata, D. suggests that these may serve agents even their crude form. results indicate a possible explanation traditional use some malaria malaria-like conditions.
