Mobile health for early retention in HIV care: a qualitative study in Kenya (WelTel Retain)

摘要: Many people newly diagnosed with HIV are lost to follow-up before timely initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART). A randomised controlled trial (RCT), WelTel Kenya1, demonstrated the effectiveness text messaging intervention improve clinical outcomes among patients initiating ART. In preparation for Retain, an RCT that will evaluate effect retain in care immediately following diagnosis, we conducted informative qualitative study living (n = 15) and healthcare providers (HCP) 5) October 2012. Study objectives included exploring experiences who have attempted engage care, use cell phones everyday life, perceptions communicating via message HCP. Participants were recruited through convenience sampling. Semi-structured, interviews recorded, transcribed verbatim analysed using NVivo software. Analysis was guided by Theory Reasoned Action Technology Acceptance Model. Results indicate while individuals many motivators engaging after structural individual barriers including poverty, depression fear stigma prevent them from doing so. All participants had access a mobile phone, most comfortable messages, or willing learn. Both HCP felt increased communication has potential enable early identification problems, leading problem solving may retention engagement during first year diagnosis.
