摘要: Despite lower areal bone mineral density (aBMD), Chinese-American women have fewer fractures than white women. We hypothesized that better skeletal microstructure in part could account for this paradox. Individual trabecula segmentation (ITS), a novel image-analysis technique, and micro–finite-element analysis (µFEA) were applied to high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) images determine microarchitecture strength premenopausal had 95% 80% higher plate volume fraction at the distal radius tibia, respectively, as well 20% 18% number compared with (p < .001). With similar rodlike characteristics, plate-to-rod ratio was twice high trabecular Plate-rod junction density, parameter indicating network connections, 37% 29% greater (p < .002). Moreover, orientation of more axially aligned because axial 51% 32% These striking differences translated into 55% 68% (distal radius, p < .001) 43% p < .01) strength, assessed by Young's moduli, versus group. The observation major microstructural advantage over may help explain why their risk fracture is despite BMD. © 2011 American Society Bone Mineral Research
