摘要: Thought Experiments (TEs) have a long history of use in science. It is suggested that, if science education to be related as clearly possible science, then TEs must play an appropriate part. The relationship between and experiments (Es) explored. A typology presented with examples drawn from the physics. potential uses various types bringing about conceptual development complement conventional practical work are addressed. analysis three typical school higher-education level physics textbooks shows that potentials identified are, at present, not realised. Indeed, elements TE design were found integrated other pedagogic devices into what we termed 'thought simulations' (TSs). In these, behaviour phenomenon was illustrated rather than predicted tested, theory assumed embedded being tentative emergent, outcome anticipated.
