摘要: Through a review of published studies and new analyses publicly available data, we assess how the European Union (EU) Nature Directives complements CBD strategic goals for 2020 as set out in 20 Aichi Targets, thereby addressing question posed by Commission about coherence with other international biodiversity commitments. We find evidence that complement several Targets Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). For example, 92% EU's Important Bird Biodiversity Areas (IBAs), many them otherwise unprotected, are partly or wholly covered Natura 2000 network protected areas (contributing to Target 11). Species listed on Annex I Birds Directive have fared better than species (Aichi 12). As 65% EU citizens live within 5 km site, 98% km, these sites potential raise awareness 1) deliver ecosystem services high proportion population 14). The provide regulatory framework that, fuller implementation, will help Member States meet their obligations under MEAs.
