摘要: The key concept of proteomics (looking at many proteins once) opens new avenues in the search for clinically useful biomarkers disease, treatment response and ageing. As number that can be detected plasma or serum (the primary clinical diagnostic samples) increases towards 1000, a paradoxical decline has occurred protein markers approved use laboratories. This review explores limitations current discovery platforms, proposes an alternative approach, applicable to range biological/physiological problems, which quantitative mass spectrometric methods developed analytical chemistry are employed measure limited sets candidate large samples. A set 177 biomarker with reported associations cardiovascular disease stroke presented as starting point such ‘directed proteomics’ approach.
