摘要: The reproductive tracts of 89 female subantarctic fur seals, taken at Gough Island between November 1977 and October 1978, were examined. Females started ovulating age 4 yr all 6-yr-old females sexually mature. They are mono-ovulatory, alternating ovaries, only single embryos found. older than 13 (n= 11) showed poor follicular development some failed to ovulate. gestation period (first recorded ovulation first birth) was 360 d, while delayed implantation implantation) lasted for 139 days. Follicle numbers in the functional ovary declined sharply after corpus luteum increased size until least 1 mo prior parturition. number follicles contralateral midwinter (June/July), mean largest peaked December. both ovaries near time, reaching a low subsequent to, ovulation. regressing albicans, conspicuous approximately 3 parturition, could not be detected macroscopically within one year postpartum. Subantarctic seals have distinct postreproductive class females. pregnancy rate ≥4 79%, it 84.5% mature group ≥6 age, puberty 4.80 yr.
