摘要: Spindle cells seen in fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the mediastinal lesions can be a component wide variety benign and malignant conditions. Few these conditions, however, are described FNA cytopathology literature. This review discusses cytopathologic features, differential diagnoses, potential pitfalls with significant spindle encountered FNAB. The files from four institutions were searched for cases FNAB containing spindle-cell that was key or predominant cytologic feature diagnostic specimen. cytomorphologic features analyzed, their discussed. Of 196 FNABs, 22 (11%) component: granulomatous inflammation (four); nerve sheath tumor thymic cyst (two); thymoma large-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma sclerosis nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease liposarcoma squamous carcinoma possibly arising teratoma (one); unspecified high-grade sarcoma melanoma nonspecific fibrous tissue (one). each lesion analyzed as an aid accurate classification. These findings correlated radiologic clinical information when available. value ancillary studies performed on aspirated material selected also reviewed. morphology represents infrequent heterogeneous group entities may pose challenges. presents salient various mediastinum particular emphasis diagnosis pitfalls. pathologist must use caution interpreting cases.
