Livestock predation by the painted hunting dog Lycaon pictus in a cattle ranching region of Zimbabwe: a case study

摘要: Abstract The painted hunting dog Lycaon pictus , labelled an inveterate stock killer, was formerly slaughtered in large numbers and eradicated throughout most of its former range. Reports a pack dogs estimated at 35 individuals, cattle losses 59 animals over 2-year period the Nyamandlovu region, Zimbabwe, were checked by fieldwork. A resident numbering 16 individuals confirmed, with home range ⩾660 km 2 . Authentic due to from herd averaging 3132 amounted ⩽26 out total 268 peak during calving season but few denning period. fed predominantly on impala, duiker kudu. There indications that some attributed fact rustling poaching.
