摘要: Crop and livestock losses to wildlife are a concern for people neighboring many protected areas (PAs) can generate opposition conservation. Examining patterns of conflict associated tolerance is important devise policies reduce impacts on wildlife. We surveyed 398 households from 178 villages within 10 km Ranthambore, Kanha, Nagarahole parks in India. compared different attitudes toward wildlife, presented hypothetical response scenarios, including killing the problem animal(s). Eighty percent reported crop 13 % losses. Higher loss was with more cropping months per year, greater variety, harvest seasons year but did not vary proximity PA, suggesting that PAs necessarily “sources” raiders. By contrast, complaints “depredating carnivores” were people-grazing animals collecting resources PAs. Many (83 %) engaged mitigation efforts. found only fencing guard losses, no efforts lower Contrary our expectations, carnivores viewed hostility than crop-raiding Households inclination kill herbivores destroying crops or harming people, preying livestock. Our model estimated 82 across (highest Kanha), while experienced 27 Ranthambore). comparative study provides insights into factors tolerance, aids improving ongoing conservation compensation
