摘要: INTRODUCTION Present antidepressant treatments are only helpful in a quarter of patients with bipolar depression, and new strategies warranted. Increasing evidence suggests that accelerated polyamine metabolism is associated the pathophysiology depression. Polyamines regulate stress responses, inflammation, neuronal signaling central enteric nervous system. Agmatine promising target altered considering its unique ability to intracellular content neuroprotective effects. Areas covered: This review discusses system relationship system, focusing on results from preclinical studies supporting between agmatine We also discussed main mechanisms underlying effects agmatine. Expert opinion: Our points out possible polyamines It efficacy several models depressive-like behaviour, it may prove be an efficacious adjunctive treatment Furthermore, proposed pathway linking systemic observed subset disorder patients, abnormal changes epithelial gut barrier blood-brain barrier.
