Effect of a novel benzimidazole derivative in experimental Schistosoma mansoni infection

摘要: Currently, praziquantel is the only drug of choice for treatment schistosomiasis. Reports resistance raise concerns about future control disease. Therefore, search new schistosomicidal drugs eminent. In this study, effect a novel benzimidazole-derived compound (compound BTP-Iso) was assessed in mice harboring adult Schistosoma mansoni (Egyptian strain). Mice were treated 42 days p.i. with BTP-Iso using two regimens (200 or 300 mg/kg). both regimens, there significant reductions number recovered S. worms especially females and immature ova, addition to reduction size hepatic granulomata. A dose mg/kg resulted decrease intestinal tissue egg loads. Effect on schistosomes confirmed by scanning electron microscopy, where from 200 revealed tegumental alternations, characterised swelling ridges, bleb formation, mild erosion male worms; however females, extensive destruction surface. These promising results may encourage use However, more research needed detect early developmental stages other species human schistosomes.
