The integrated aims to combine discrete miniature components a common substrate by means optical waveguides. physics an waveguide can be illustrated through planar or slab geometry. Fiber-to-waveguide coupling efficiency is motivating factor for fabrication phosphosilicate glass waveguides Guided-wave silicon include Fresnel lenses, beam splitters, dispersive mirrors, couplers, polarization devices, spectrum analyzers, displacement sensors, refractive index wavelength frequency division multiplexers demultiplexers, Bragg cells, switches, Y branches, X crosses, directional 8 × star arrays, phase shifters, birefringence controllers, resonators, reflector lasers, reflection filters. As materials involved in silica-based are similar those low-loss fibers, it should possible realize active like lasers amplifiers
