摘要: The present study was undertaken to explore the protective effects of tuberous root extract Pueraria tuberosa on chronic foot shock stress (CS) induced physiological, neurobehavioral and neuropathological alterations. Male Wistar rats (120-150 g) were divided into seven groups, consisting ten animals in each. Group I served as normal, group II positive control, while III-VII test drug treated. P tuber (PTE) given groups III-VI at doses 50, 100, 200 400 mg/kg respectively, VII treated with Withania somnifera rhizome (WSE) (100 mg/kg) reference drug. (stress control) received only equivalent volume distilled water (0.5 ml/100 orally. All drugs orally once/day for 14 consecutive days. last dose 1 h before study. Simultaneously, all (except I) subjected foot-shock (2 mA) through a grid floor those days standard conditioning chamber escape route closed [Chronic (CS)]. Thereafter, placed open-field plus maze apparatus studying behavioral patterns them, anxiolytic putative Sexual activities also studied. Finally, sacrificed their ulcer formation gastric mucosa noted. Weights adrenals spleen taken. Further, plasma corticosterone levels estimated spectroflurometrically. Results indicated that, CS significantly altered patterns, decreased sexual urge activities, damaged mucosal layers, enhanced increased adrenal glands weights. PTE WSE showed significant activity, protected mucosa, lowered level (indicating HPA axis inhibition) negated hypertrophy spleen. exposed stress. findings suggest anti-stress properties PTE, confirming clinical efficacy plant mentioned Ayurveda (Indian system traditional medicine).
